Tyler's Christmas Portraits

Tyler is a little more than 1 now but he's already walking fast enough to make taking his picture a challenge. I rolled out some white paper and tried to get some shots that showed how cute this kid is. Lighting was simple; large white umbrella camera left and hair light center back with the exception of the opening photo. The white umbrella was far to the side and no hair light and a Christmas tree in the background.

Dayna Fashion Shoot

Dayna wanted to show off her new look so I set up an impromptu photo shoot real quick. The lighting was simple but effective: Metz 50 af-1 at 1/2 power through white umbrella in front camera right, and bare Lumopro lp-120 at 1/4 power peeking over the center of the backdrop for a hair light.

Kelly and Dan's Wedding

I teamed up with Sean McCabe (from seanmccabephoto) to capture Kelly and Dan's wedding. It was a great chance to put my new Pentax K-5 through its paces and see how it fares.

The venue was beautiful venue. We shout the wedding at The Old Onion Pub and Brewery in Lake Barrington. There were large windows letting in some great natural light.

The set up was very nice. The colors were a great simple choice. White with green accents on the chairs. The flowers were young and fresh and accented the tables with green buds. Each seat received their own onion along with a recipe. It was a simple but nice gift.

We got there early to leave plenty of time for pictures. It didn't feel rushed at all and the atmosphere was calm and leisurely. Kelly was dressed early on and got to sit around and relax while others got ready. The men all needed help putting on their boutineers.

The wedding party grabbed a few drinks before the ceremony, laughing and having a good time. The K-5 has been handling well so far, but its been bright and sunny. Here in the bar, there was pretty low light. This is where the K-5 shines. ISO 1600 is no problem at all.

The ceremony was underway. Here, Kelly places the wedding band on Dan's finger.

After the ceremony, the bridal party greeted the guests and showed them to their seats for the reception. The setting sun was shining in the back windows letting in some great warm light.

Kelly and Dan share their first dance together, a shot with just the right timing. A guest happened to take a picture with their camera at the same time I did, creating this great backlit glow. Sometimes accidents help an image. Kelly and her father dance next and finally Dan and his mother

It was a great night of dancing. Everyone was out on the floor all night. They looked like they were having a ball.

Ill Family Photoshoot

We met up with the Ill family to do some family portraits. This was one of those situations where you have to have backup plans to backup plans. Their first choice of photo destinations was the beautiful Cantigny, a popular place for portrait photography of all kinds. However, the entire park was closed for a private wedding.

Our second stop was a somewhat unknown park hidden in a small housing community. This, too, was closed but for a renewal of wedding vows ceremony. On to Plan C.

Just around the corner is a nice plot of land; it isn't a park but we checked it out and found some nice locations. The setting sun made a warm, backlit setup ideal.

I threw on a 1/4 CTO gel so they didn't look pasted into the background and blasted my flash full power through a white umbrella. Very simple set up. The shots looked great and we wrapped up in a short amount of time.

Polaroid Colorpack II and Fuji Instant Film

I picked up an old Polaroid Colorpack II camera the other day. I've had a newer SilverExpress Polaroid camera that takes 600 film for while, but alas, after Polaroid stopped producing the film, its just too expensive. You can still get 600 instant film from the impossible project. Even there's its a bit much. But I've always had this hankering to shoot with instant film.

Well, I recently learned that Polaroid sold Fuji Film the rights to its 669 film (the kind the Colorpack II takes). So, fuju now sells color and black and white instant film. I have a pack of fp-100b, which is ISO 100 black and white film. You can pick up the film at most major camera retailers, like b&h or calumet

I've only taken a few shots, but my first 3 were all pretty blurry, like the one below. I was afraid that's how they would all turn out. Focusing is a little different than it is with an SLR. With an SLR, you see through the lens that also takes the picture so you can see where you are focusing. That's one of the biggest advantages of an SLR. With this Polaroid, you look through a separate lens than the one that is used to take the picture, so you don't really know where its focusing. You have to guess. And your guess isn't always right.

As you can see from this next shot, as well as the one in the beginning of the article, you can get sharp pictures with this old plastic rig. This one isn't perfect but that's part of the charm of the this old camera and film. Imperfect results can sometimes be desirable.

Had to test out my new Metz 50 af-1 as soon as it got here. Manual power works great. It goes low enough to let me shoot at f/2 for portraits with amazingly thin depth of field. My Lumopro lp120 is getting serviced and should be back soon, with more power. Can't wait.

Billboard Shoot with Hasselblad H4D-40

On Thursday, we had 2 models in for a photoshoot for a billboard we are working on. We rented a Hasselblad H4D-40 and a bunch of lighting gear, including a ringflash. The hasse with the ringflash was a beast to shoot with. Very heavy, maybe 10 lbs. We had to swap out our 4 Gb memory cards every 58 shots as they were filled up that quick.

The camera was not very ergonomical or intuitive. The controls were a mess all over the camera and the useful ones were not laid out in a place your fingers could reach while shooting. However, the lens and IQ were amazing. I can zoom in on a full body shot and count the eyelashes.

Here's the timelapse I made of the shoot. I didn't keep it going through the whole thing, but you can see a little bit of how we prepare, and shoot. You get the idea. Next time we have a big shoot, I will make sure to keep it going the whole time.

I got to work on a few of the shots from the shoot yesterday. After converting from raw (.3FR?), and saving as a tiff, the files are huge and my work mac is struggling to do much of anything with them. Wish I had my PC; haven't even made that thing sweat yet.

This one has the original image as the background layer (hidden by other layers), then a huge gradient, and the clipped out models as a separate layer. Weighs in at 1.8Gb tiff.

The higher ups really love the smiley, we're-having-fun look where as we liked the edgy, hip and cool look. Still this one has a nice look to it.

I prefer these poses/looks. Much edgier and serious.

I spread the models out a little bit in post but now they look kinda awkwardly far apart. I added a vector city cutout behind them and some fog (that I am not fond of, think I'll remove it)

Still looking through all the shots and talking with the decision makers about the final image. Then it will go to graphics for the typeface stuff.

Should go up in a month or so, I would think.

Kyla Newborn Shoot

We were lucky enough to photography Kyla when she was just 1 week old. Almost all of the shots were done with one light, with the exception of a few with a background light.

I had this shot in my head of a baby lying on white fur with a sheer ribbon ripple across the frame. I think the dark green was a little too bold. I would have prefered something a little more pastel and more sheer. Still, the flow of the fabric looks good.

Technically, the shot was fairly easy, but needed a little tweaking in post to even out the light due to falloff. A single shoot through umbrella was used at about the 10-11 o'clock position and above. This resulted in the bottom right corner being darker than the other corners. A digital graduated neutral density filter took care of that pretty quick.

Christmas cards and birth announcements all in one!

Tyler Newborn Shoot

You might remember Matt and Katie from their maternity photoshoot a few months ago. Well, Tyler is now 1 month old and a real cutie. We had some ideas coming in and as usual, they let us stay for far too long to try them all. I really wanted to try something with some texture and different patterns. I grabbed a basket, some faux fur, something sheer and a fabric with a fun repetitive pattern for the background. Add 1 baby and some light and voila.

We took some photos of the whole family too.

Tyler was pretty cute, though a lot of time was spent sleeping and crying. Occasionally we'd get a good smile.

I don't think he liked posing for some of the shots. He's pretty grumpy looking here.

Sara's Maternity Shoot

We had a great time taking pictures of Sara at 6 months. Her family has a beautiful back yard that made for a great background. For this shot, Michelle held a scrim above her to block the direct sunlight, then I used my umbrella-softbox with a Canon 430ex at full power to balance her with the daylight. And, yes, we were all eaten alive by mosquitoes while trying to get this shot.

This is one of those times I wish I had a stronger studio strobe instead of hotshoe flashes and a higher sync speed. 1/180 wasn't doing much to knock out the ambient light and at f/7.1, the flash was barely bright enough to balance.

In our mobile studio, things are a different story. I can open up the aperture a bit more, control the background light and really light how I want.

Katie and Matt Maternity Shoot

We crammed way too many good ideas into this session. Exhausted after more than 3 hours of shooting, we packed our gear into the car and made our way home, giddy with the excitement of processing and sharing these shots. We tried many new poses, used new props and new lighting techniques. It was basically a photo playground, trying out anything we wanted. And the results speak for themselves. Fun triumphs over work every time.

Katie sent us some great shots for inspiration. The first of which had a nearly silhouetted couple on a white background. I was not sure of the original setup, so I tried the first thing that came to mind. I setup my flash behind a white background to blow it out with no front lighting. Perfect! The way the light played with the rear edges skin was great.

Adding some front lighting via a 48in umbrella sofbox gives a nice high key lighting setup. Keeping the lighting mostly on axis (camera left) keeps the lighting bright and clean.

Moving the softbox to the side creates more shadows and drama

We even used some props that we haven't used before. I'm not big on the portraits with picture frame I have seen elsewhere, but when used to frame the baby, it was great

For this shot, we brought out the black background. I removed the softbox umbrella and hit Katie from behind with a bare flash, camera left. It was about 3 feet behind and 4 or 5 feet the left. It gives a pretty nice rim light effect. In retrospect, a strip light would have been the better choice here since I lose some of the rim effect on the curves of the belly. The single strobe light source is just to small to make it all the way around that curve. However, as I don't have a strip box, this will have to due for now.

We had seen this shot done with potential names of the baby on the post-its. We thought it would be cuter to do things that Mom and Dad can't wait to do with their new baby.

Matt and Katie's new puppy, Riley, is so adorable, we had to get her into some of the shots. Michelle had this image of the puppy with a paw on Katie's belly and licking her, as if Riley and the baby were old friends. We didn't quite get the image she imaged, but this is just as cute. Makes me say, "awwwww" every time.

DPS Spring/Fall Assignment: 1st Place

My diptych, above, took first place in the Digital-Photography-School.com Spring/Fall contest. Couldn't think of a shot to enter for the contest until I started playing with my macro setup. That's when the idea to take the theme title very literally hit me. I browsed through the entries and didn't see another literal translation so I started setting up my shot.

I used plastic wrapped mat-board on the bottom and background for a flat white surface. The plastic reflected the subject in a nice way. I set up some white paper on camera right for fill. I took apart a ball point pen and placed the spring on the mat-board. I had all 50mm of extension tubes on my 50mm lens for a total of 100mm at a little less than 1:1 magnification. The dominoes were a bit larger than the spring, so I only used 12mm of extension tubes on my 50mm lens.

The Dominoes shot was much harder to photograph. Setting up the dominoes was a challenge in and of itself. The plastic didn't sit flat, but hovered over the surface of the mat-board. So, placing one domino down caused the plastic to shift and knock the other dominoes over. Once it was all set up, I had to knock the dominoes down, get my hand out of the way of the flash and press the shutter all before the dominoes were all the way down. First take; my shot was late and the dominoes were just laying on the board. The shot I used was the second take.

Picasa Featured Photo

I am very honored to have had my photo chosen by the Google team as a featured photo for April 2010. I love all the great comments my picasa photos are getting. Thanks, Google. Yes, Michelle's hand is now world famous. For reference, there were roughly 300 views and 1 comment before it was featured on Picasa's Explore tab.

For this shot, I set up some pink wrapping paper on the wall and curved it down onto a table. I sliced the grapefruit, ate the rest, and had Michelle hold it in front of the background. I setup my flash behind her hand on the table pointing to the grapefruit. This gives the nice rim light on the left side of her hand. It also makes the color and texture of the grapefruit apparent by shining through it. In front of her hand, I setup a flash through a white umbrella which lit the her hand and arm with nice soft light.

Light Fashion and Film Noir

I had an idea for doing some fashion type shots where instead of makeup creating patters on the model, it was done with light. As usual, my guinea pig for crazy lighting ideas was Michelle. I liked this shot because it came out more film noir looking than I thought it would. I am thinking about creating a more dynamic scene next time that might tell a story using the film noir style.

To create this shot, I used one lumopro lp120 flash with a snoot. I flagged the end to only allow an ellipse of light. The paper I used to flag the snoot also created some fill slightly revealing the details in the face.

This one is more along the lines of my fashion idea. Instead of having a colored scar of makeup down the models face, I used light. This is her angry face. I used the same technique as the above shot for the scar of light, though a tighter flag was used. Then I lit from camera left with a bare vivitar 2800-d.

Elohim Photoshoot

I really like the look of this first shot. The background was actually some chroma key green screen. It was thick and instead of wrinkling like regular fabrics, it sort of bent into this really organic wavy texture. It looked great in black and white, not quite as nice in bright green.

I threw up a dark brown background for this next shot. Her hair seemed to fade into the background so I set up a light on the left side to light her hair. This separated her from the background enough and added some drama to the shot.

Though I am a big fan of black and white photography, not everyone is. So, here is one in color. Michelle says this one looks waaayyy too much like her senior portraits from back in high school.

This shot was taken before I figured out their lights could be turned down. I had my aperture up to somewhere around f/11, I think. Much higher than I would like. My depth of field got the backgound in focus as well as the subject, which I found unflattering. Once I got the lights turned down, I could use a larger aperture and get the background out of the depth of field. Out of the shots with my aperture cranked up to 11, I prefer the pose in this one.

Chicago's most lovable pet contest

Michelle and I are entering Buster, her bunny, into a "most lovable pet" contest through wlit.com, the lite, a radio station. Voting should start this afternoon. We came up with this shot as our entry. I hope you will vote for him!

Niamh's Family Portraits

We braved a layer of ice to drive up to Niamh's new house for some family portraits. It was cold and snowing and raining and maybe some other stuff too. But inside, it was warm and the family was ready for some pictures. We did some fun shots during the session, including a "robot" shot.

All the kids layed on the nice wood floors for this pinwheel shot. I once again, braved the heights of a ladder. With my head between the blades of a ceiling fan, and my hands with camera outstretched, I got the shot.

Stephanie and Mark's Wedding

Kruszka Family Portraits

We drove up to Wisconsin for some family photos with the Kruszkas. The pictures were a surprise for their mom for Christmas. To get everyone in the shot, we moved outside and I moved onto a wobbly ladder.

Indoors, we set up a nice tan background for more formal shots.

Both brothers and sister together. Mom is sure to like this one.

Ally Senior Portraits

We met Ally over at her high school to take some scenic senior portraits. We walked all around the school looking for nice locations. This bell behind the school is on top of the hill overlooking the football fields.

There are some really nice gardens in the back as well. We did a few sitting in the garden in a nice dress.

To took the umbrella off one of the flashes and set it up behind her. The light coming from behind better defines the subject and adds a dramatic difference in light ratios. Nothing says school like the brick and windows in the background.

The Kohouts Family Portraits

The Kohouts had their family pictures taken in their favorite local park. I took them into the woods for the shot above. The light coming through the trees made for a nice background. I had the ambient exposed at about -1.5ev and brought them back up using the strobes and shoot through umbrellas.

Then we moved to a brighter location. The whole family sat on the side of the bridge. Then we took some smaller group shots.

David and Ashley Engagement Portraits

We met David and Ashley at the Katherine Legge Lodge for a stunning engagement shoot.

One of their favorite photos was both of them upside down, hanging off a couch. We "updated" the photo by having them hang off a stone wall.

Random portraits of Michelle

This is just a set of photos of Michelle.

This was shot with a pretty basic clamshell setup. I had a Vivitar 2800-d on full power about 2 feet in front and 1 foot above her into a white shoot through umbrella. She held some white poster board below as a reflector. For the background, I had a Lumopro lp120 on 1/2 power hitting the white wall behind her.

This shot was taken just after a storm. It was suprisingly cold outside. The sun was getting low and the light was great. The wheat was blowing in the wind pretty strongly. This shot took home first place in the Digital-photography-school.com headshot contest

We took these two photo after walking around the Rockford Japanese garden for the day. I love the matching color of the coat, lips and foliage in the first shot. There was some bright white gravel on the ground below us that acted as a reflector. There were a few other nice shots taken that day.

Ria Senior Portraits

Ria isn't your typical senior and we didn't want to give her typical senior portraits. We went out to Indiana to an abandoned factory for some unique shots.

The rain came down just as we got there. It really added a nice touch to the background of some of the shots.

The shade of this large tree was a nice break from the heat.

After all the work, we decided to have a little fun.

This is the first post in M.e. Photography's new blog. We are changing formats to this new, easier to use site. We will be able to update our clients more quickly, get preview images out in a more pleasing format and hopefully gain a few more fans. Watch this site for more updates in the future. We will try to backup our old update posts here as well.
